Promoting Wellness, Health and
Access to High-Quality Health Care

Grants Awarded: Dancing for Health

The New York Daily News called it "Low-Fat Ballet." We call it smart programs: combining the joy of dance and movement with nutritional education to help children and adults lead healthier lives, especially in urban areas where minority populations are at high risk of obesity.

We are proud to announce support from Aetna and the Aetna Foundation for four "Dancing for Health" programs around the country: the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York, The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, Dance Out Diabetes in San Francisco, and the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. All four organizations target local communities where obesity rates are alarmingly high.

Dance's therapeutic impact is also featured in Aetna's 2011 Latino Calendar, which celebrates Latino dancers, choreographers and movement instructors making a difference in their communities.

We believe that by supporting effective and accessible programs at the grassroots level while working with researchers to understand obesity's root causes will ultimately reverse today's obesity epidemic.

You can read more about these programs in our news release.

IOM Conference Presentations Now Online

On February 24 and 25, the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, hosted the workshop Reducing Disparities in Life Expectancy, one of several workshops sponsored by the Aetna Foundation. Held in Washington, D.C., the conference explored factors that influence life expectancy and the role of prevention in influencing these factors, focusing specifically on racial and ethnic minorities and low income populations. U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin was the keynote speaker. The conference presentations are available online. Click on "Presentations" on the right side of the screen.
