Dear Colleague,

We are proud to share with you the news that we are continuing our support of the AcademyHealth/Aetna Foundation Minority Scholars Program, our partnership created last year that provides professional development, mentoring and networking opportunities for top researchers in health services and disparities research. Our grant will extend the program through 2013. More details are available in our news release.

Applications for the 2011 cohort are being accepted through March 15 on the AcademyHealth web site. Candidates must be full-time graduate students, post-doctoral fellows or clinical fellows in health services or disparities research and identify themselves with one or more of the following underrepresented minority groups: Black/African-American; Hispanic/Latino; and American Indian/Alaska Native. We encourage you to share this information with researchers who may be interested.

You can meet our 2010 scholars at www.aetnafoundationscholars.org. The inaugural group is quite impressive and includes:

  • a post-doctoral fellow exploring disparities in access to and use of prescription medicine;
  • a PhD candidate interested in learning more about why higher breast cancer mortality rates exist along the U.S. and Mexican border;
  • a physician and research fellow studying access to care for immigrant populations;
  • a physician and university professor researching new models of health care delivery; and
  • a pharmacist conducting research in health outcomes disparities.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Aetna Inc.'s commitment to eliminating health disparities. A decade ago, Aetna launched an initiative to address the significant gaps in health outcomes and access to high-quality health care by our society’s different minority populations. Aetna became a pioneer in collecting voluntary information from its members about their racial and ethnic backgrounds, becoming one of the first insurers to do so.

We are pleased to build on Aetna's efforts with the Aetna Foundation's own commitment to promoting equity in health and health care and our support of the health care leaders of tomorrow.

Warmest Regards,

Anne Beal Signature
