Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce the funding of a landmark new study that promises to help women most at risk of breast and ovarian cancer, receive the genetic testing they need.
Researchers from the University of South Florida and Georgetown University, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will explore the current use and outcomes of genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in a large, representative population of insured individuals. This is the first national study of BRCA testing.
The goal is to see if some women are being tested unnecessarily while others, who are at high risk but members of low-income groups, or racial or ethnic minorities, are not receiving these critical tests. The two-year study will also examine the use of risk-reduction and screening services by patients following testing.
The study will examine de-identified data on approximately 13,000 Aetna members who receive testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.
We believe this new research has the potential to have a tremendous impact on public health and improve the health outcomes among high-risk poor and minority women. We are proud to be a part of ground-breaking new work in one of our three primary giving areas – promoting racial and ethnic equity in health and health care.
We look forward to sharing the results of the study with you when they become available.
Yours sincerely,
Aetna Foundation, Inc.
