Aetna Foundation Supports Head Start
Healthy Eating Program
With support from the Aetna Foundation, a consortium of New York City-based nonprofits is working to address childhood obesity among children who attend Head Start. Called Healthy Eating for a Healthy Start, the two-year demonstration pilot will provide Head Start staff with training and resources to provide their young students with healthier meals and snacks, engage the children and their families in nutrition education and healthy lifestyle behaviors, and encourage physical activity for children and their families. The pilot will be conducted at eight Head Start programs in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Currently, nearly 40 percent of the 18,000 children who attend the school readiness program in New York are either obese or overweight.
