Promoting Wellness, Health and
Access to High-Quality Health Care

Grant-Making Focus Refined for Integrated Health Care

The Aetna Foundation has honed the strategic direction for its Integrated Health Care Program, one of its three primary focus areas, to concentrate on deepening the knowledge of care coordination. The Foundation is interested in proposals that promote evidence-based models of care coordination that can lead to high-quality, patient-centered health care services, improve health outcomes and lower costs. Our goal is to demonstrate the key components, best practices and benefits of care coordination that is centered on strong primary care.

The more precisely defined grant-making interest along with detailed descriptions of recently awarded grants can be viewed on the Aetna Foundation website.

"We believe that a strong foundation of primary care is the key to improving care coordination among health care providers, which in turn will lead to better health outcomes and lower costs," said Anne C. Beal, MD, MPH, president of the Aetna Foundation. "We look forward to supporting research and programs that have the potential to achieve these goals."

Letters of Inquiry should be submitted through the Foundation's online grant submission system.

Aetna Foundation/NMF Scholars Named

The first recipients of medical school scholarships from a new partnership between the Aetna Foundation and National Medical Fellowships (NMF) were announced recently at the organization's 65th anniversary gala in Los Angeles. Clemente Gonzales, who serves on the Foundation's regional grant-making committee and who is a regional director for Aetna's Community Relations and Urban Marketing, announced the initial group of scholarship winners.

  • Monique Chambers, a medical student at the University of California, Davis, who initiated the first elective course at UC Davis designed specifically on the social determinants of minority health outcomes. She is also co-director of the Imani Clinic, a student-run free clinic providing primary care to the uninsured in a historically African-American neighborhood.
  • Jonathan Li Robles-Dunlap, a medical student at Stanford School of Medicine, who served for three years as president and chief operating officer for the student-created nonprofit Global Health Volunteers, Inc., and was a Fulbright Scholar in Ecuador.
  • Veronica Ramirez, a medical student at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, who created the Latino Health Awareness Project, a Latino Medical Student Association initiative at Keck.

The Aetna Foundation/NMF Healthcare Leadership Program was created earlier this year to help address the severe national shortage of physician leaders who are committed to the health of underserved communities. The program provides $5,000 scholarships to 10 second- and third-year medical students from underrepresented minority groups with a commitment to serve medically underserved communities. Additional 2011 scholarship recipients will be announced later this summer.

2011 AcademyHealth/Aetna Foundation Minority Scholars Meet

The 2011 cohort of AcademyHealth/Aetna Foundation Minority Scholars had the opportunity to network with each other, previous scholars, mentors and members of the Aetna Foundation staff on June 12 at AcademyHealth's annual research conference in Seattle. The 15 young doctoral candidates and post-doctoral fellows found the conference an invaluable opportunity to learn from preeminent researchers in the field. This year's group of scholars includes researchers affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, among other prestigious institutions. The Foundation and AcademyHealth created the program in 2010 to increase the number of leaders in health services research from underrepresented minority populations.

Aetna Foundation Data Challenge Excites Software Developers

The June 9th announcement of the Aetna Foundation's Developer Challenge at the Institute of Medicine's Health Data Initiative Forum has attracted attention from software developers, health services researchers and the media. In partnership with Health 2.0, the Foundation is offering a $50,000 purse of prize money for the top three browser-based, interactive software applications that will help health researchers, public health officials and policymakers make better use of government public health data related to obesity.

Twenty days following the announcement, the Aetna Foundation Challenge is the most viewed challenge by a wide margin of all recently launched challenges. Among the news outlets covering the Challenge are The Wall Street Journal Online, Information Week and HealthLeaders Media. The winners will be announced at the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco on September 27.
