$300,000 Grant to Prepare Urban Teens for Health Care Career
Building a pipeline of health care professionals from underrepresented minority populations is about to get a little help thanks to a $300,000 Aetna Foundation grant to the National Academy Foundation (NAF) in New York. The nonprofit organization is a leader in the urban high school reform movement and brings together small learning communities, business involvement, and work-based learning experiences to prepare at-risk students for the global economy. The Aetna Foundation’s grant will help create a new NAF career academy theme, the Academy of Health Services, to help high school students prepare for the health care services profession while addressing the achievement gap in science, technology and mathematics, particularly among underserved populations. NAF expects to have in place 65 academies, serving 26,000 students, around the country by 2015.
Earlier this year, the Aetna Foundation awarded nearly $650,000 in grants aimed at diversifying the next generation of doctors and other health care professionals. In addition to AcademyHealth, recipients include Four Directions Summer Research Program, National Medical Fellowships, Southern Methodist University, and the United Negro College Fund.
Grant Supports Free Counseling for Veterans and Their Families
The Aetna Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to Give an HourTM, a nonprofit organization that provides free counseling to U.S. military personnel, veterans and their families to help them cope with post-traumatic stress and other psychological impacts of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Give an Hour recruits behavioral health providers to volunteer their services. In May, Aetna Behavioral Health announced that it was actively recruiting volunteers from its clinical staff and its network of 104,000 behavioral health providers.

New Government Listing of Patient-Centered Medical Homes Major Step Forward, Says Beal
A newly available web-based catalogue of all federal agency activities related to developing the patient-centered medical home model of primary care promises to be a valuable resource, says Dr. Anne Beal. "Health services researchers, policymakers and administrators can see at a glance the innovations and collaborations of federal agencies to strengthen primary care, a health reform strategy we believe is fundamental to improving health care in the U.S.," said Beal.
Produced by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the catalogue summarizes the work of more than a half-dozen federal agencies to promote a robust primary care delivery system. Participating agencies include AHRQ, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Department of Defense, Health Resources and Services Administration, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to the catalogue, the website features AHRQ's definition of the patient-centered medical home, white papers on care coordination and the medical neighborhood, decision makers’ briefs on health technology and patient engagement, and a searchable database of articles.
