Grant Recipient Study Garners Headlines
How healthy is your Chicago neighborhood? That was the question asked by the ground-breaking A Profile of Health and Health Resources within Chicago’s 77 Communities, by Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Public Health. The study was made possible with support from Aetna and the Aetna Foundation. The 150-page study, released on August 15, found that the south and southwest sides of Chicago suffer the most in terms of residents’ health and access to basic health resources. News coverage of the study included The Chicago Sun-Times, WTTW-TV, News Medical, and Progress Illinois. News reports on CLTV, WBBM-TV, WBBM-AM, WFLD-TV, and WMAQ-TV also referenced the study that was authored by Juliet Yonek and Romana Hasnain-Wynia.
Vote for Your Favorite "Aetna Voices of Health" Nominee
As part of its support for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project, Aetna has nominated 35 organizations to compete to win a national award that are working to close health disparities gaps and promote healthy living.
From August 28 through October 8, these groups will participate in an online competition where the public can vote for their favorite organization. Aetna will donate $25,000 to the organization receiving the most online votes; $15,000 to the second-place finisher; and $10,000 to the third-place finisher. Go to www.aetnavoicesofhealth.com for information about the nominees and the voting process.
The "Aetna Voices of Health" campaign, sponsored by Aetna's Community Relations and Urban Marketing, is designed to bring attention to agencies around the country that are working to end health disparities and are fighting conditions like asthma, diabetes and childhood obesity, all of which hit people of color at higher rates than the overall population.
Interview with Anne Beal Available
Anne Beal's interview on "Tuned2Health" aired on Sunday, August 28 on New York City's WHTZ-FM, also known as Z100. The half-hour interview on the obesity epidemic, health equity issues and the Aetna Foundation can be heard on the Tuned2Health website.
Data Challenge Deadline Extended
Software developers keen to win a $25,000 first prize from the Aetna Foundation now have more time to take the Aetna Foundation Data Challenge and create a browser-based application that brings together government data on obesity and data visualization options. The deadline has been extended to December 15 to allow developers extra weeks to build the complex software. The judges are Mark Bertolini, Aetna chairman and CEO; Anne Beal, president of the Aetna Foundation; Andre Black, the director of digital communications/new media at the American Heart Association; Lisa Simpson, the executive director of AcademyHealth; Lee Sherman, co-founder of Visual.ly Inc. and Chris Hewett, founder of Mindbloom Inc.
