We are pleased to share that the Aetna Foundation has partnered with both the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine (IOM) and AcademyHealth in support of work to establish racial and ethnic equity in health and health care. A two-year partnership with the IOM will support the ongoing work of the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities. Created to stimulate action, advance strategies to reduce disparities, promote health equity, and foster new leadership, the roundtable includes leaders from the health professions, the federal government, the philanthropic sector, universities, and community groups. Expected outcomes from this partnership include the publication of five new workshop summary reports, four meetings and public workshops of the Roundtable, and continued focus of health equity and health disparities issues within the National Academies. We are similarly proud to join forces with AcademyHealth. Our newly formed partnership will support the professional development of 15 under-represented minorities in the field of health services research, thus helping to build the pipeline of disparities researchers through a minority scholars program, help launch a four-part webinar series on current issues on disparities research and support a related disparities interest group designed to foster a stronger community of researchers studying disparities in health care quality. We are delighted to partner with both the IOM and AcademyHealth and support their efforts to advance greater racial and ethnic equity in health care--an area we've long supported, and will continue to support in 2010 and beyond.
